MP second jobs and outside interests
Outside earnings and financial interests are registered separately from IPSA expenses. This guide explains the difference and where to find both datasets on this site.
Two transparency systems
IPSA regulates and publishes business cost claims. Parliament separately requires registration of outside employment, donations, gifts, shareholdings and other interests.
An MP may have high expenses and no outside interests, or registered outside earnings with moderate expenses — the datasets answer different questions.
Category 2 — donations and support
The register's category 2 covers donations and other support for activities as an MP. On profiles, we also show these as grants and donations where values are published.
Common questions
- Are second jobs the same as expenses?
- No. Paid outside work and financial interests are declared on Parliament's Register of Members' Financial Interests. IPSA expenses are business costs of the MP role.
- Where are outside interests on this site?
- Each MP profile has an Outside financial interests section sourced from Parliament's interests API, grouped by category as published.
- Does this site rank MPs on outside earnings?
- No. We display registered interests as published, without scores or 'worst offender' framing.
